Postal vs courier DDP to the US: which costs less?

Etsy notes that tariff estimates can differ depending on whether you ship postal or courier (Etsy Help). The bigger difference for small sellers is usually the carrier’s fee for paying the duty for you.

Rule of thumb
Minimum fees dominate cheap parcels. With FedEx’s $17.50 floor, an item with $3 of duty costs over $20 to clear. UPS’s floor is $5. A per-parcel postal fee of 50p barely moves the price. For higher-value items, percentage fees matter more than minimums and courier speed may be worth it.

Why is courier DDP expensive on cheap items?
Couriers charge a disbursement fee for advancing duty, with minimums: UPS lists $5 and FedEx lists $17.50 on US imports. On a $20 item that minimum can be larger than the duty.
Is postal always cheaper?
Often for low-value parcels, but postal DDP is not available from every country, and from January 20, 2027 postal parcels owing Chapter 99 duty need formal entry or Entry Type 13.
