Etsy’s DDP requirement for US orders, explained

Facts checked 2026-11-03 · HTS Revision 22 (2026)

Short version: if you sell on Etsy from outside the United States, US orders now need to go out Delivered Duty Paid (DDP), meaning you, not your buyer, pay the US import duty and the carrier’s clearance fees before the parcel arrives. Etsy made this a condition of its Purchase Protection program for US orders from July 9, 2026 (Etsy announcement).

What changed

  • DDP to keep protection. Orders shipped to the US without DDP can lose Etsy Purchase Protection. If a buyer is asked to pay tariffs at the door, Etsy says those charges may be deducted from the seller (Seller Handbook).
  • Where DDP isn’t available, the listing must say duties are not included, and you must message the buyer an estimate before shipping (Seller Handbook). Our no-DDP helper writes both texts with your numbers.
  • US-specific pricing. Etsy lets you set a separate US price so you can fold the duty into it rather than raising prices for everyone (Etsy Help).

Why the built-in Etsy estimate is not the whole cost

Etsy’s own estimated-tariffs tool lives inside Shop Manager and is powered by a third party. Etsy’s help page states three limits worth knowing (source):

  • It is unavailable for listings with price variations.
  • Its estimates do not include carrier fees such as customs clearance, brokerage or admin charges.
  • Etsy does not guarantee the HS/HTS codes it suggests; you are responsible for your customs data.

There is also a quieter cost: Etsy’s transaction, processing and (in some countries) regulatory fees are percentages of the price. When you add the duty to your price, Etsy takes its percentage of that duty too. We explain that in fees on fees.

A practical checklist

  1. Find your 10-digit HTS code and its rate with the HTS lookup. Verify it on hts.usitc.gov.
  2. Pick a DDP-capable carrier for your country (Etsy keeps a list in the Seller Handbook). Compare postal and courier fees with our comparison.
  3. Run each listing (and each variation) through the calculator to get a US price that keeps your margin after duty, carrier fees and fees-on-fees.
  4. Set that as your US-specific price, and re-check when the “rates last synced” date changes.

Try it with your numbers. The link below opens the calculator prefilled for this case. Change anything.

FAQ

Do I have to ship DDP to US buyers on Etsy?

Since July 9, 2026, US orders shipped from outside the US need Delivered Duty Paid shipping to keep Etsy Purchase Protection. If buyers are charged tariffs at delivery, Etsy says those charges can be deducted from the seller.

What if no DDP service exists from my country?

State in the listing that duties are not included, and message the buyer an estimate of duties and carrier fees before you ship.
